It’s long been my ambition to record an album, honouring my musical heritage and reflecting my own musical odyssey. “Time & Tide; Celtic Echoes” is the result. The title reflects the wonder of folk music, as it connects peoples and generations.

Along with self compositions, the album contains Irish songs and instrumentals, more from America, England, Germany & Scotland, and also a Spanish influence. Like a good session, there’s room for them all.

The music stretches back in time from the contemporary to the ancient Gaelic world with two Turlough O’Carolan pieces. Born over 350 years ago in 1670, many of his compositions hark back to even earlier centuries.

I had a great musical crew: my brother Seán Cullen, anticipating the note I would play; Paul Kelly, a generous maestro and the mandolin doyen of Irish folk music; and Alan Doherty, a wonderful musician whose playing is especially beautiful on the slower melodies.

Recording in Hellfire Studios was great fun, a pity it had to end. Engineer Joe McGrath, another maestro, always had the encouraging word, and Ivan Jackman, a wizard for sure, did wonders with his mixing & mastering.

A word of thanks: to our inspirational folk troubadours of the 1960s and 70s, I think we were gifted a golden generation; the warm musicians and singers I have met along the way; and those equally important participants, the listeners.

Finally, a special thanks to P J Curtis for his inspiration and support.

about

Jimmy Cullen

Coming from a home with Eileen Óg chasing Drowsy Maggie, and a tin whistle at 5, I was fortunate.

Later, inspired by the folk troubadours, especially Turlough O’Carolan, Planxty and Pentangle, I found my own musical voice.

Now it feels timely to release some music from my travels, along with a couple of compositions.

Hoping these recordings may help others enjoy and share music as I have.
